Deontay Wilder Empties The Tank To Get Past Derek Chisora

Deontay Wilder versus Derek Chisora wasn’t the fight to watch if you wanted to see graceful technique and punches flowing beautifully. But if you wanted to see two warriors give it all physically and mentally, then you got what you came for and more.

Wilder and Chisora fought 12 messy, grueling rounds at the O2 Arena in London. The fight itself played out the same way most of the other fights of Wilder and Chisora do: Wilder (45-4-1 43 KOs) looked to stay at range and throw the right while Chisora (36-14 (23 KOs) looked to press forward and grind his opponent down.

In the end, it was Wilder who was able to endure the non-stop pressure of Chisora. Chisora didn’t lose from lack of trying, as he was able to seriously hurt Wilder multiple times, namely with his signature overhand right. To his credit, Wilder showed maybe the best chin he’s ever had as he was able to take massive shots from Chisora and quickly recover.

Wilder, while glaringly not in possession of the quick trigger he once had, was able to get his right hand home, officially knocking Chisora down twice and cutting him. He chose to work behinid Chisora looked clueless. Wilder himself was dealt a knockdown, but in reality it was mostly a slip.

Wilder would go on to win by split decision on scores of 115-111,15-113, 115-112. For Wilder it is a rebirth of sorts as he is looking to extend his now two-fight winning streak. At 40 years old and repeatedly speaking of his desire to be more active, it will be interesting to see how Wilder wraps up the final hours of his exciting career.
