Jay Deas Nearly Floors Former Boxer Carlos Elliot

Carlos Elliot was inducted into the Alabama Boxing Hall of Fame on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at the One One Six Boxing Show, promoted by Brandi Mccain in Gadsden, AL.

As a professional boxer, Carlos Elliot has plenty of experience delivering and receiving punches. However, Jay Deas almost pulled off the impossible; nearly flooring him with not a punch, but a single phone call.

When Carlos Elliot got the call from Jay Deas that he was being inducted into the Alabama Boxing Hall of Fame on February 11, it hit him as hard as any opponent in the ring ever could. “I almost hit the floor,” Elliot recounted during his acceptance speech at The Venue at Coosa Landing in Gadsden, AL. “That call from Jay lifted my spirits in so many ways. I’ve been dealing with heart failure and other sickness and that call was just what I needed.” Although living in Misawa, Aomori, Japan, Elliot was quick to affirm that Alabama will always be his home and he is thankful any time he is able to visit his family and ancestors.

After talking with Elliot for a few minutes it is impossible not to notice his humility and meekness. Not in the sense of passiveness, but more in the sense of appreciation for his lived experiences and accomplishments; one of those accomplishments being his family. He made sure to point out the members who had made the trip with him and spoke to the love and appreciation he has for them. “These people here with me are very important,” he said proudly. “This is a great moment but them being here makes it priceless.”

While speaking with Elliot one-on-one backstage he spoke about the experience of being a black American fighter in another country and having to earn respect. “It takes a while to get that backing from Japan. (But) When you come in and know you’re game and you've got the power to prove it, they’re gonna all surround you (eventually). And you are that superstar. They’re gonna keep putting people up against you and the more you start knocking ‘em down, the more they get behind you. You have to earn your way over there.”

Elliot ended his career with a record of 26-3 (22 KOs) and reached #1 in the WBA rankings.

He also owns and operates "Elliot Boxing Gym," located in Japan.
